Hyperbolic functions

Definition

The hyperbolic functions are the functions sinh⁡\sinh, cosh⁡\cosh and tanh⁡\tanh on R\mathbb{R}, together with their reciprocals: coth⁡x=cosh⁡xsinh⁡x (x≠0),sech⁡x=1cosh⁡x,csch⁡x=1sinh⁡x (x≠0).\coth x = \frac{\cosh x}{\sinh x} \ (x \ne 0), \qquad \operatorname{sech} x = \frac{1}{\cosh x}, \qquad \operatorname{csch} x = \frac{1}{\sinh x} \ (x \ne 0). Here sinh⁡\sinh, cosh⁡\cosh and tanh⁡\tanh are the hyperbolic sine, cosine and tangent.

Remarks

They satisfy identities similar to the trigonometric identities, often with a change of sign. The point (cosh⁡t,sinh⁡t)(\cosh t, \sinh t) lies on the hyperbola x2−y2=1x^2 - y^2 = 1, as (cos⁡t,sin⁡t)(\cos t, \sin t) lies on the circle. Vincenzo Riccati introduced the hyperbolic functions in 1757.

Explanations

L1 human

The hyperbolic functions are built from exe^x and e−xe^{-x}. They play the role for the hyperbola that sine and cosine play for the circle.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
