definition

Cauchy product

Definition

Let ∑n=0∞an\sum_{n=0}^{\infty} a_n and ∑n=0∞bn\sum_{n=0}^{\infty} b_n be real series. For each nn, let cn=∑k=0nakbn−kc_n = \sum_{k=0}^{n} a_k b_{n-k}. The series ∑n=0∞cn\sum_{n=0}^{\infty} c_n is the Cauchy product of the two series.

Remarks

The term cnc_n collects all products aibja_i b_j with i+j=ni + j = n. For power series, the Cauchy product of ∑anxn\sum a_n x^n and ∑bnxn\sum b_n x^n is ∑cnxn\sum c_n x^n. This is the rule for multiplying polynomials. The Cauchy product of two convergent series need not converge. Mertens' theorem gives a sufficient condition.

Explanations

L1 human

To multiply two series, multiply every term of one by every term of the other. The Cauchy product groups these products by the sum of their indices.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 4 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
