Limit at infinity

Definition

Let D⊆RD \subseteq \mathbb{R} be a set that is not bounded above, and let f ⁣:D→Rf \colon D \to \mathbb{R} be a function. A real number LL is the limit of ff at +∞+\infty if for each ε>0\varepsilon > 0 there is MM with ∣f(x)−L∣<ε|f(x) - L| < \varepsilon for all x∈Dx \in D with x>Mx > M. The notation is lim⁡x→∞f(x)=L\lim_{x \to \infty} f(x) = L. The limit at −∞-\infty is defined in the same way, with x<Mx < M.

Remarks

A sequence is a function on N\mathbb{N}. For sequences this definition gives the limit of a sequence. For example, lim⁡x→∞1/x=0\lim_{x \to \infty} 1/x = 0. Mathlib expresses x→∞x \to \infty by the filter Filter.atTop.

Explanations

L1 human

The limit at infinity is the value that f(x)f(x) approaches as xx grows without bound. The graph then gets close to a horizontal line y=Ly = L.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 3 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
  • no evidence level
  1. Limit point of a set definition
  2. Limit of a function definition
  3. Limit at infinity definition

What depends on this

12 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
