definition

Removable discontinuity

Definition

Let D⊆RD \subseteq \mathbb{R}, let f ⁣:D→Rf \colon D \to \mathbb{R}, and let a∈Da \in D be a limit point of DD. The point aa is a removable discontinuity of ff if the limit L=lim⁡x→af(x)L = \lim_{x \to a} f(x) exists and L≠f(a)L \ne f(a).

Remarks

Change the value of ff at aa to LL. The new function is continuous at aa. For example, let f(x)=1f(x) = 1 for x≠0x \ne 0 and f(0)=0f(0) = 0. Then 00 is a removable discontinuity. Some texts also call aa removable when a∉Da \notin D and the limit exists. An example is sin⁡(x)/x\sin(x)/x at 00.

Explanations

L1 human

At a removable discontinuity, the graph has a single misplaced point. Moving this one point repairs the continuity.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 4 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
