statement proposition

Reciprocal rule

Statement

Let gg be a real function on an open interval II, differentiable at a∈Ia \in I, with g(a)≠0g(a) \ne 0. Then 1/g1/g is differentiable at aa, and (1g)′(a)=−g′(a)g(a)2.\left( \frac{1}{g} \right)'(a) = -\frac{g'(a)}{g(a)^2}.

Remarks

The difference quotient is −g(a+h)−g(a)h⋅1g(a+h)g(a)-\frac{g(a + h) - g(a)}{h} \cdot \frac{1}{g(a + h) g(a)}. Continuity of gg at aa gives the limit. For example, (1/x)′=−1/x2(1/x)' = -1/x^2 for x≠0x \ne 0. Mathlib states it as HasDerivAt.inv.

Explanations

L1 human

When gg grows, 1/g1/g shrinks, so the two derivatives have opposite signs. The factor 1/g21/g^2 shows that 1/g1/g changes fast where gg is small.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 7 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
