Dirichlet function

Counterexample

Let f ⁣:R→Rf \colon \mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{R} be given by f(x)=1f(x) = 1 for rational xx and f(x)=0f(x) = 0 for irrational xx. Then ff is not continuous at any point. Indeed, each real aa is the limit of a sequence of rationals and of a sequence of irrationals. Their images tend to 11 and to 00, so one of them does not tend to f(a)f(a).

Remarks

The function ff is the indicator function of Q\mathbb{Q}. Every rational number is a period of ff. The function is not Riemann integrable on any interval with more than one point.

Explanations

L1 human

Rational and irrational numbers lie mixed together in every small interval. So the function jumps between 00 and 11 near every point, and it has no limit anywhere.

What this node needs for W1
  • edge refutes or not_instance_of out (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 8 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
