definition

Taylor polynomial

Definition

Let II be an open interval, let a∈Ia \in I, and let f ⁣:I→Rf \colon I \to \mathbb{R} be kk times differentiable at aa. The Taylor polynomial of degree kk of ff at aa is Pk(x)=∑j=0kf(j)(a)j!(x−a)j=f(a)+f′(a)(x−a)+⋯+f(k)(a)k!(x−a)k.P_k(x) = \sum_{j=0}^{k} \frac{f^{(j)}(a)}{j!} (x - a)^j = f(a) + f'(a)(x - a) + \cdots + \frac{f^{(k)}(a)}{k!} (x - a)^k.

Remarks

It is the unique polynomial PP of degree at most kk with P(j)(a)=f(j)(a)P^{(j)}(a) = f^{(j)}(a) for j=0,…,kj = 0, \dots, k, using higher derivatives. For k=1k = 1, its graph is the tangent line. The difference Rk=f−PkR_k = f - P_k is the remainder. Taylor's theorem says that it is small near aa. Mathlib has taylorWithinEval for Taylor polynomials within a set.

Explanations

L1 human

The Taylor polynomial copies the value and the first kk derivatives of ff at aa. It is the polynomial that best fits ff near aa.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 7 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
  • no evidence level

  4. Differentiable function definition
  5. Derivative function definition
  6. Higher derivative definition
  7. Taylor polynomial definition

What depends on this

40 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
