statement theorem

Taylor's theorem

Statement

Let k≥1k \ge 1, let II be an open interval, let a∈Ia \in I, and let f ⁣:I→Rf \colon I \to \mathbb{R} be kk times differentiable at aa. Let PkP_k be the Taylor polynomial of degree kk of ff at aa. Then there is a function hk ⁣:I→Rh_k \colon I \to \mathbb{R} with hk(x)→0h_k(x) \to 0 as x→ax \to a and f(x)=Pk(x)+hk(x)(x−a)kfor all x∈I.f(x) = P_k(x) + h_k(x) (x - a)^k \quad \text{for all } x \in I.

Remarks

In little o notation, the conclusion is the Peano form f(x)−Pk(x)=o((x−a)k)f(x) - P_k(x) = o((x - a)^k). Under stronger hypotheses, the remainder has explicit forms: the Lagrange form, the Cauchy form, and the integral form. For k=1k = 1, it says that f(x)=f(a)+f′(a)(x−a)+o(x−a)f(x) = f(a) + f'(a)(x - a) + o(x - a).

Explanations

L1 human

Near aa, a function is close to its Taylor polynomial. The error is small even compared with (x−a)k(x - a)^k.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge about out: the concepts that the statement is about (0 of 1)
  • edge proves in: at least one proof node (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 8 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
