definition

Jump discontinuity

Definition

Let D⊆RD \subseteq \mathbb{R}, let f ⁣:D→Rf \colon D \to \mathbb{R}, and let a∈Da \in D be a limit point of both D∩(−∞,a)D \cap (-\infty, a) and D∩(a,∞)D \cap (a, \infty). The point aa is a jump discontinuity of ff if both one-sided limits lim⁡x→a−f(x)\lim_{x \to a^-} f(x) and lim⁡x→a+f(x)\lim_{x \to a^+} f(x) exist and are different.

Remarks

The difference of the two one-sided limits is the size of the jump. For example, the sign function has a jump discontinuity at 00, of size 22. Monotone functions have only jump discontinuities.

Explanations

L1 human

At a jump discontinuity, the graph approaches one height from the left and another height from the right. No choice of the value at aa can repair this.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 4 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
  • no evidence level
  1. Limit point of a set definition
  2. Limit of a function definition
  3. One-sided limit definition
  4. Jump discontinuity definition

What depends on this

1 node uses this node, directly or through other nodes.
