counterexample

x^2 is not uniformly continuous on the real line

Counterexample

The function f ⁣:R→Rf \colon \mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{R} with f(x)=x2f(x) = x^2 is continuous but not uniformly continuous. For n≥1n \ge 1, let xn=nx_n = n and yn=n+1/ny_n = n + 1/n. Then ∣xn−yn∣=1/n→0|x_n - y_n| = 1/n \to 0, but f(yn)−f(xn)=2+1n2>2.f(y_n) - f(x_n) = 2 + \frac{1}{n^2} > 2. So no δ\delta works for ε=2\varepsilon = 2.

Remarks

On each bounded interval [−c,c][-c, c], the function x2x^2 is Lipschitz with constant 2c2c. So it is uniformly continuous there. The problem is that the slope 2x2x is not bounded on R\mathbb{R}.

Explanations

L1 human

The graph of x2x^2 gets steeper and steeper as xx grows. So a fixed small change in xx gives larger and larger changes in x2x^2.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • edge refutes or not_instance_of out (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 7 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
