statement proposition

Product of continuous functions is continuous

Statement

Let D⊆RD \subseteq \mathbb{R} and let f,g ⁣:D→Rf, g \colon D \to \mathbb{R} be continuous functions. Then the sum f+gf + g and the product fgf g, given by (fg)(x)=f(x)g(x)(f g)(x) = f(x) g(x), are continuous.

Remarks

The proof uses sequential continuity and the product rule for limits of sequences. In particular, cfc f is continuous for each constant cc. Mathlib states it for topological monoids, as Continuous.mul.

Explanations

L1 human

If f(x)f(x) and g(x)g(x) change only a little when xx changes a little, so does f(x)g(x)f(x) g(x).

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 16 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
