statement theorem
Weierstrass approximation theorem
Statement
Let and let be continuous. Then for every there is a polynomial with for all .
Remarks
Equivalently, there is a sequence of polynomials that converges uniformly to on .
One proof uses the Bernstein polynomials on , together with uniform continuity of .
The Stone–Weierstrass theorem generalizes the result to compact spaces. Mathlib states the theorem as polynomialFunctions_closure_eq_top.
History
Karl Weierstrass proved the theorem in 1885.
Explanations

Every continuous function on a closed bounded interval is uniformly close to a polynomial. So polynomials can imitate any continuous graph as closely as we like.
What this node needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
