Gelfand transform
Builds on Character spaceSpace of functions vanishing at infinity
Definition
Let be a commutative complex Banach algebra, and let be its character space. For , the Gelfand transform of is the function The Gelfand transform (or Gelfand representation) of is the map , , into the continuous functions vanishing at infinity on .
Remarks
Each is continuous by the definition of the weak-* topology, and it vanishes at infinity. The map is an algebra homomorphism with . If has a unit, then , the spectrum of , so is the spectral radius of . The kernel of is the Jacobson radical of .
Example: let with convolution . For in the unit circle, is linear, nonzero, and multiplicative by the Cauchy product formula, so it is a character. Every character has this form, and identifies with the circle. The Gelfand transform of is the absolutely convergent Fourier series .
Non-example: the construction needs to be commutative. The algebra has no characters at all. A character vanishes on commutators, and the commutators span the trace-zero matrices. So its kernel is a nonzero two-sided ideal of the simple algebra , hence everything. So for the "Gelfand transform" would map into functions on the empty set and lose all information.
