Statement

Let aa and bb be complex algebraic numbers with a≠0a \ne 0, a≠1a \ne 1, and b∉ℚb \notin \Q. Let log⁡a\log a be any value of the complex logarithm of aa. Then the number ab=eblog⁡aa^b = e^{b \log a} is transcendental.

Remarks

The proof builds an auxiliary function F(z)=∑i,jcije(i+jb)zlog⁡aF(z) = \sum_{i,j} c_{ij} e^{(i + j b) z \log a} with integer coefficients cijc_{ij}, not all zero, chosen so that FF vanishes at many integer points. If aba^b were algebraic, the values of FF and its derivatives at integers would be algebraic numbers of controlled size. An analytic estimate and a lower bound for nonzero algebraic numbers then force too many zeros, which is a contradiction. Examples: 222^{\sqrt{2}} is transcendental, and so is eπe^{\pi}, since eπ=(−1)−ie^{\pi} = (-1)^{-i} with log⁡(−1)=iπ\log(-1) = i\pi. Another consequence: log⁡3/log⁡2\log 3 / \log 2 is transcendental, since it is irrational and 2log⁡3/log⁡2=32^{\log 3 / \log 2} = 3. The hypothesis b∉ℚb \notin \Q is necessary: 21/2=22^{1/2} = \sqrt{2} is algebraic. The theorem answers Hilbert's seventh problem. Baker's theorem generalizes it to linear forms in several logarithms.

For a student

An equivalent form: if α\alpha and β\beta are nonzero algebraic numbers and log⁡α\log \alpha and log⁡β\log \beta are linearly independent over ℚ\Q, then they are linearly independent over the algebraic numbers. This is the case of two logarithms in Baker's theorem. Together with the Lindemann–Weierstrass theorem, it is one of the classical results of transcendence theory. The question whether e+πe + \pi or eπe \pi is transcendental is still open.
