Generalized Cartan matrix
Builds on Matrix
Definition
Let and let be an matrix with entries in . The matrix is a generalized Cartan matrix if:
- for every ;
- for all ;
- if and only if .
Remarks
Example: has diagonal entries , off-diagonal entries , and no zero entries, so it is a generalized Cartan matrix.
Non-example: satisfies the first two clauses, but while , so it fails clause 3.
A generalized Cartan matrix is symmetrizable if there is an invertible diagonal matrix with positive entries such that is symmetric. It is indecomposable if no reordering of the indices brings it into block diagonal form with two or more blocks. The Cartan matrices of finite-dimensional semisimple complex Lie algebras are exactly the generalized Cartan matrices whose principal minors are all positive.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
