Generalized coordinates
Builds on Configuration spaceHolonomic constraint
Definition
Consider a system of point particles with position vector , subject to holonomic constraints that may depend on time . For each , let be the set of positions allowed at time , the configuration space at that time. Let be open and let be an open interval of times. Generalized coordinates on a part of the system's configurations are given by a smooth map such that:
- For each , the map is injective and its image is an open subset of .
- For each , the matrix has rank .
The numbers are then called generalized coordinates, and are the generalized velocities.
Remarks
Example: for a planar pendulum of length , take and ; this map is injective onto the circle minus the top point, and . Non-example: the map with near is not a choice of generalized coordinates for the pendulum, because it takes values outside the circle , which violates clause 1. Clause 2 makes the generalized coordinates local coordinates of the configuration space as a manifold. Usually one set of generalized coordinates covers almost all configurations, but not all of them, as for the pendulum and the top point.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
