Generalized inverse

Builds on MatrixField

Definition

Let FF be a field and let AA be an m×nm \times n matrix over FF. A generalized inverse of AA is an n×mn \times m matrix GG over FF such that AGA=A.A G A = A.

Remarks

Example: for A=(11)A = \begin{pmatrix} 1 & 1 \end{pmatrix}, the column G=(10)G = \begin{pmatrix} 1 \\ 0 \end{pmatrix} is a generalized inverse, because AG=(1)AG = (1) and so AGA=AAGA = A. Non-example: for A=(1000)A = \begin{pmatrix} 1 & 0 \\ 0 & 0 \end{pmatrix}, the matrix G=(2000)G = \begin{pmatrix} 2 & 0 \\ 0 & 0 \end{pmatrix} is not one, because AGA=(2000)≠AAGA = \begin{pmatrix} 2 & 0 \\ 0 & 0 \end{pmatrix} \ne A. If AA is square and invertible, then A−1A^{-1} is its only generalized inverse. If Ax=bAx = b has a solution and GG is a generalized inverse, then x=Gbx = Gb is a solution, since AGb=AGAx=Ax=bAGb = AGAx = Ax = b. A generalized inverse is often written A−A^- or A(1)A^{(1)}; it is also called a {1}\{1\}-inverse. A matrix GG that satisfies also GAG=GGAG = G is a reflexive generalized inverse.
