Definition

Let 𝐀\mathbf{A} be a structure with domain AA for a signature Οƒ\sigma, and let XβŠ†AX \subseteq A. A subset BβŠ†AB \subseteq A is closed if it contains c𝐀c^{\mathbf{A}} for each constant symbol cc and f𝐀(b1,…,bn)∈Bf^{\mathbf{A}}(b_1, \dots, b_n) \in B for each nn-ary function symbol ff and all b1,…,bn∈Bb_1, \dots, b_n \in B. The set generated by XX is Sg⁑(X)=β‹‚{BβŠ†A:XβŠ†BΒ andΒ BΒ isΒ closed},\operatorname{Sg}(X) = \bigcap \set{B \subseteq A : X \subseteq B \text{ and } B \text{ is closed}}, the intersection of all closed subsets that contain XX. When Sg⁑(X)\operatorname{Sg}(X) is nonempty, the subalgebra generated by XX is the substructure of 𝐀\mathbf{A} with domain Sg⁑(X)\operatorname{Sg}(X).

Remarks

The set AA itself is closed and an intersection of closed sets is closed, so Sg⁑(X)\operatorname{Sg}(X) is the smallest closed subset containing XX. For finitary operations, Sg⁑(X)=⋃kβ‰₯0Xk\operatorname{Sg}(X) = \bigcup_{k \ge 0} X_k, where X0=XX_0 = X and Xk+1X_{k+1} is XkX_k together with the constants and all values f𝐀(b1,…,bn)f^{\mathbf{A}}(b_1, \dots, b_n) with b1,…,bn∈Xkb_1, \dots, b_n \in X_k.

Example: in (β„€,+,βˆ’,0)(\Z, +, -, 0), Sg⁑({4,6})=2β„€\operatorname{Sg}(\set{4, 6}) = 2\Z. The set 2β„€2\Z is closed and contains 44 and 66; and any closed set containing 44 and 66 contains 6βˆ’4=26 - 4 = 2, hence all multiples of 22.

Non-example: the set 4β„€βˆͺ6β„€4\Z \cup 6\Z contains {4,6}\set{4, 6} and 00 but is not Sg⁑({4,6})\operatorname{Sg}(\set{4, 6}), because it is not closed: 4+6=104 + 6 = 10 is not in it.

When Οƒ\sigma has no constants, Sg⁑(βˆ…)=βˆ…\operatorname{Sg}(\emptyset) = \emptyset.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
