Combinatorics Theorem

Generating function of binary trees by leaves

Builds on Generating functionCatalan numbers

Statement

Let cnc_n be the number of rooted, unlabeled, ordered binary trees with nn leaves, for n≥1n \ge 1. Here each node that is not a leaf has exactly two children, in a fixed left to right order.

Then the generating function C(x)=∑n≥1cnxnC(x) = \sum_{n \ge 1} c_n x^n is C(x)=1−1−4x2=∑n=1∞1n(2n−2n−1)xn.C(x) = \frac{1 - \sqrt{1 - 4x}}{2} = \sum_{n=1}^{\infty} \frac{1}{n} \binom{2n-2}{n-1} x^n.

Remarks

So cn=1n(2n−2n−1)c_n = \frac{1}{n}\binom{2n-2}{n-1}, which is the Catalan number Cn−1C_{n-1}. Example: c1=1c_1 = 1, c2=1c_2 = 1, c3=2c_3 = 2, c4=5c_4 = 5. Splitting a tree at the root gives C(x)=x+C(x)2C(x) = x + C(x)^2, and the square root form is the root of this quadratic that vanishes at x=0x = 0.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
