Definition
Let be a pseudo-Riemannian manifold with Levi-Civita connection , and let be an interval. A smooth curve is a geodesic if where is the covariant derivative along induced by .
Remarks
In local coordinates, with Christoffel symbols , the condition is the geodesic equation
Example: in with the Euclidean metric all vanish, so the geodesics are the curves with , that is .
Non-example: in , the curve traces a straight line, but , so it is not a geodesic: a geodesic must have constant speed.
The quantity is constant along a geodesic. On a Riemannian manifold, every geodesic is locally length-minimizing: each has a neighbourhood in on which is a shortest curve between its endpoints. For each and there is a unique maximal geodesic with and .
