Geodetic triangulation
Summary
Geodetic triangulation determines the positions of points by measuring angles in a network of triangles. Only one side of the network, the baseline, needs to be measured as a length. The other sides follow from the angles by the law of sines, triangle after triangle. Triangulation networks were the main tool of large surveys and of measurements of the figure of the Earth before satellites.
