Geodynamo
Summary
The geodynamo is the process that generates and maintains the Earth's magnetic field. Convection of liquid iron alloy in the outer core, organised by the Earth's rotation, induces electric currents, and these currents produce the field. It is the main application of dynamo theory. Without it, the field would decay by ohmic dissipation in a few tens of thousands of years.
