Geomagnetic reversal
Summary
A geomagnetic reversal is a change in the polarity of the Earth's magnetic field, after which magnetic north and magnetic south have swapped. The axial dipole part of the field changes sign and keeps the new sign for a long time. Reversals are recorded in rocks and in the magnetic stripes of the ocean floor. They are a main test for models of the geodynamo.
