Geopotential model in spherical harmonics

Summary

A geopotential model expands the gravitational potential of the Earth in spherical harmonics. Outside the Earth the potential is a harmonic function that tends to 00 at infinity. So it is a series of terms r−n−1r^{-n-1} times surface spherical harmonics of degree nn. The model is a table of coefficients Cˉnm,Sˉnm\bar C_{nm}, \bar S_{nm}, estimated from satellite orbits and gravity data. The largest term after the central one is J2J_2, which describes the Earth's flattening.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
