Geopotential model in spherical harmonics
Builds on GeopotentialSpherical harmonicsAssociated Legendre polynomialsLaplace's equation
Definition
Use geocentric spherical coordinates: radius , geocentric latitude and longitude . Let be the mass parameter of the Earth and a reference radius. Let be the fully normalised associated Legendre functions of degree and order . A geopotential model of degree is the function given by the real numbers and , its Stokes coefficients. It models the gravitational part of the geopotential outside a sphere that contains all the masses of the Earth.
Remarks
Example: the model with and only describes an axially symmetric flattened Earth; with it reads , where ; for the Earth, . Non-example: the function with is not of this form, since terms grow at infinity; it is not the potential of bounded masses. Each term is a solution of Laplace's equation, since is a spherical harmonic of degree . The degree terms are absent because the origin is the centre of mass. The series for converges outside a sphere around the origin that contains all masses.
