Definition
Let and be topological spaces and let . Consider pairs , where is an open neighbourhood of and is a map. Two such pairs and are equivalent at if there is an open neighbourhood of with for all . This is an equivalence relation. The germ of at is its equivalence class.
Remarks
One often restricts to continuous, smooth or holomorphic maps, and writes for the germ. The value depends only on the germ, and so do derivatives of all orders at when is smooth. More generally, let be a filter on a set . Two maps on have the same germ along if they agree on some member of . The case above uses the neighbourhood filter of .
Example: on , the maps and have the same germ at , since they agree on .
Non-example: on , let and let for , with . Both are smooth, and all their derivatives agree at . Yet for every , so they agree on no neighbourhood of , and their germs at differ.
