Definition
Let be an index set, and for each let be a scheme. For all , let be an open subscheme with . Let be isomorphisms of schemes such that:
- is the identity of for every .
- for all .
- on for all (the cocycle condition).
A gluing of these data is a scheme with open immersions such that:
- the open sets cover ;
- for all ;
- on for all .
Such a gluing always exists, and it is unique up to a unique isomorphism compatible with the maps .
Remarks
Example: let be a field, , , and . Let be the isomorphism given by the ring map , , and . With only two indices the cocycle condition holds, and the gluing is the projective line . If instead is given by on , the gluing is the affine line with a doubled origin, which is a scheme but not a separated one. Non-example: with as in the first example, take to be given by over a field with . The composite is given by , so it is not , and clause 3 fails for , .

- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
