Definition
Let be a commutative ring and an -module. The injective dimension is the least such that there is an exact sequence of -modules. Here every must be an injective module, and if there is no such sequence. A commutative Noetherian local ring is a Gorenstein local ring if . A commutative Noetherian ring is a Gorenstein ring if the localization is a Gorenstein local ring for every prime ideal .
Remarks
A Gorenstein local ring is Cohen–Macaulay, and then . Equivalently, a Noetherian local ring of dimension is Gorenstein if and only if for and . For an Artinian local ring this says that the socle is a -vector space of dimension , or that is the injective hull of as an -module. Example: with and a field is Gorenstein, since its socle is . Non-example: is Artinian local with socle of dimension , so it is not Gorenstein, although it is Cohen–Macaulay.
