Graceful tree conjecture
Statement
Let be a finite simple graph with edges. Let be the vertex set of . A graceful labeling of is an injective map with the following property. The edge labels , for the edges of , are pairwise distinct. Then the edge labels are exactly . The conjecture: every finite tree has a graceful labeling.
Remarks
The conjecture is open. It is also called the Ringel–Kotzig conjecture. It is known for many families of trees, for example paths, stars and caterpillars, and computer searches have checked it for all trees with few vertices. A path has the graceful labeling , with edge labels . Rosa showed that a graceful labeling of a tree with edges gives a decomposition of the complete graph into copies of . So the conjecture would imply Ringel's conjecture on such decompositions. Ringel's conjecture was proved for all large by Montgomery, Pokrovskiy and Sudakov, by other methods. Not every graph is graceful: for example the cycle has a graceful labeling only when or .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
