Grassmannian as classifying space

Example

Let n≥1n \ge 1. For k≥nk \ge n, let Gn(ℝk)G_n(\R^k) be the Grassmannian of nn-dimensional linear subspaces of ℝk\R^k. The inclusions ℝk⊂ℝk+1\R^k \subset \R^{k+1} give inclusions Gn(ℝk)⊂Gn(ℝk+1)G_n(\R^k) \subset G_n(\R^{k+1}), and Gn(ℝ∞)=⋃kGn(ℝk)G_n(\R^\infty) = \bigcup_k G_n(\R^k) carries the weak topology of this union. The tautological bundle γn={(V,v)∈Gn(ℝ∞)×ℝ∞:v∈V}\gamma^n = \set{(V, v) \in G_n(\R^\infty) \times \R^\infty : v \in V} is a real vector bundle of rank nn over Gn(ℝ∞)G_n(\R^\infty).

Let XX be a paracompact space. Then [f]↦f∗γn[f] \mapsto f^* \gamma^n is a bijection from homotopy classes of maps X→Gn(ℝ∞)X \to G_n(\R^\infty) to isomorphism classes of real rank nn bundles over XX. Rank nn real vector bundles correspond to principal O(n)O(n)-bundles through their bundles of orthonormal frames. So Gn(ℝ∞)G_n(\R^\infty) is a classifying space BO(n)BO(n) of the orthogonal group O(n)O(n). The frame bundle of γn\gamma^n is the universal bundle; its total space is the infinite Stiefel manifold Vn(ℝ∞)V_n(\R^\infty), which is contractible.

Remarks

For n=1n = 1, G1(ℝ∞)=ℝP∞G_1(\R^\infty) = \R P^\infty, and real line bundles over a CW complex XX correspond to classes in H1(X;ℤ/2ℤ)H^1(X; \Z/2\Z) through the first Stiefel–Whitney class. In the same way, the complex Grassmannian Gn(ℂ∞)G_n(\C^\infty) is BU(n)BU(n), and ℂP∞=BU(1)\C P^\infty = BU(1) classifies complex line bundles. The cohomology ring H∗(Gn(ℝ∞);ℤ/2ℤ)H^*(G_n(\R^\infty); \Z/2\Z) is the polynomial ring over ℤ/2ℤ\Z/2\Z on w1(γn),…,wn(γn)w_1(\gamma^n), \ldots, w_n(\gamma^n), which is why every mod 22 characteristic class of rank nn bundles is a polynomial in Stiefel–Whitney classes.
