Classifying space

Summary

The classifying space BGBG of a topological group GG is the base of a universal bundle EG→BGEG \to BG. Principal GG-bundles over a CW complex XX correspond to homotopy classes of maps X→BGX \to BG. Cohomology classes of BGBG give the characteristic classes of such bundles. For a discrete group GG, the space BGBG is the classifying space of the group in the sense of an Eilenberg–MacLane space K(G,1)K(G, 1).
