Definition
Let be a topological group. A classifying space of is the base space of a universal principal -bundle . It is written , and the total space is written .
Remarks
Any two classifying spaces of are homotopy equivalent, so is well defined up to homotopy. For a CW complex , isomorphism classes of principal -bundles over correspond to homotopy classes of maps . A principal -bundle over a CW complex with contractible total space is universal, so its base is a .
Example: the circle group acts freely on the unit sphere of , with quotient . Since is contractible, is a classifying space of .
Non-example: is not a classifying space of . The bundle is a principal -bundle, but its total space is not contractible, and while .
For a discrete group , a classifying space is the same as a classifying space of the group, an Eilenberg–MacLane space . Other examples: and are infinite Grassmannians, and .
