Definition

For n≥0n \ge 0, let BU(n)BU(n) be the classifying space of the unitary group U(n)U(n). Let γn→BU(n)\gamma_n \to BU(n) be the universal complex vector bundle of rank nn, and let MU(n)MU(n) be its Thom space. The bundle γn⊕ℂ\gamma_n \oplus \C is classified by a map BU(n)→BU(n+1)BU(n) \to BU(n+1) covered by a bundle map γn⊕ℂ→γn+1\gamma_n \oplus \C \to \gamma_{n+1}, which induces a map Σ2MU(n)→MU(n+1)\Sigma^2 MU(n) \to MU(n+1) of Thom spaces. The complex cobordism spectrum MUMU is the spectrum with MU2n=MU(n),MU2n+1=ΣMU(n),MU_{2n} = MU(n), \qquad MU_{2n+1} = \Sigma MU(n), whose structure maps are the identity ΣMU2n=MU2n+1\Sigma MU_{2n} = MU_{2n+1} and the map ΣMU2n+1=Σ2MU(n)→MU(n+1)=MU2n+2\Sigma MU_{2n+1} = \Sigma^2 MU(n) \to MU(n+1) = MU_{2n+2}. Complex cobordism is the generalized cohomology theory represented by MUMU: for a pointed CW complex XX and k∈ℤk \in \Z, MU~k(X)=colim⁡n [ΣnX,MUn+k]∗.\widetilde{MU}^k(X) = \operatorname{colim}_n \, [\Sigma^n X, MU_{n+k}]_*.

Remarks

MUMU is a Thom spectrum, and it is a commutative ring spectrum, with multiplication induced by the Whitney sum maps BU(n)×BU(m)→BU(n+m)BU(n) \times BU(m) \to BU(n+m). By the Pontryagin–Thom construction, πn(MU)\pi_n(MU) is the cobordism group of closed smooth nn-manifolds with a complex structure on the stable normal bundle. Milnor and Novikov showed that π∗(MU)≅ℤ[x1,x2,…]\pi_*(MU) \cong \Z[x_1, x_2, \ldots] with deg⁡xi=2i\deg x_i = 2i; in particular πn(MU)=0\pi_n(MU) = 0 for odd nn.

Example: π2(MU)≅ℤ\pi_2(MU) \cong \Z, generated by the class of ℂP1\C P^1 with its complex structure.

Non-example: ℝP2\R P^2 is a closed smooth surface, but it is not orientable, so it has no stably complex structure and gives no class in π2(MU)\pi_2(MU).
