Definition
For , let be the universal -plane bundle over the classifying space , and let be the trivial line bundle. Let be a sequence of spaces with maps and such that classifies the vector bundle , where . Write for the Thom space of a bundle . The Thom spectrum of this sequence is the spectrum with spaces . Let be the reduced suspension. The structure maps of are the composites . Here the second map is induced by the bundle map that covers .
Remarks
Example: with gives the spectrum . Here classifies , so the condition holds by construction. Taking gives . For complex bundles one uses and the universal complex bundle, whose Thom space is placed in degree ; this gives the spectrum of complex cobordism.
Non-example: keep the spaces but take all structure maps constant. This is still a spectrum, but its structure maps are not induced by bundle maps, so it is not the Thom spectrum . Indeed, all its stable homotopy groups vanish, while .
More generally one can form the Thom spectrum of a map , taking for the preimage of under , after replacing by a fibration.
