Definition
Let be a topological space, and give the product topology. Let be the equivalence relation on generated by the following relations, for all :
- ;
- .
The suspension of is the quotient with the quotient topology.
Remarks
The two classes and are the two cone points of . A continuous map induces a continuous map by .
Example: let , a two-point discrete space. Then is two segments, and the relation joins their lower ends and their upper ends. The result is homeomorphic to the circle . More generally, is homeomorphic to for every .
Non-example: collapsing only gives the cone , not the suspension. For the cone is a disc, which has a boundary circle, while is a sphere.
For a pointed space , the reduced suspension also collapses the segment .
