Geophysics Gravity field of the Earth Concept
Gravity anomaly
Summary
A gravity anomaly is the difference between the actual gravity of the Earth at a point and the gravity of a smooth reference model there. In geodesy the model is the normal gravity of a reference ellipsoid. Gravity anomalies are the main data for computing the geoid, and in geophysics they reveal density contrasts below the surface.
