Definition
Let be a deformation of an open set , with deformation gradient and right Cauchy–Green tensor . The Green–Lagrange strain tensor is the field where is the identity matrix.
Remarks
With the displacement , so that , one has Dropping the quadratic term gives the infinitesimal strain tensor . For the simple shear with having rows , , , the tensor has rows , , . For a rotation by the angle about the third axis, . But has diagonal entries , , , which is nonzero for . So the small-strain tensor fails to vanish for large rotations. The tensor is also called the Green–St. Venant or Lagrangian finite strain tensor.
