Gromov–Witten invariant
Definition
Let be a smooth projective variety over of dimension . Let be integers and let . A stable map of genus with marked points and class is a tuple such that:
- is a connected projective curve of arithmetic genus whose only singularities are nodes.
- are distinct smooth points of .
- is a morphism with .
- The tuple has finitely many automorphisms.
Let be the moduli stack of such stable maps, with evaluation maps , . It carries a virtual fundamental class of degree For , the Gromov–Witten invariant is
Remarks
Example: let , , times the class of a line, and . The virtual dimension is , and each point class has complex degree , so point classes fill the dimension exactly. The invariant is the number of rational plane curves of degree through general points, with , and .
Non-example: let have a genus component that contracts to a point. If that component carries only two special points, nodes or marked points, the map is not stable. That component has infinitely many automorphisms fixing its two special points, so clause 4 fails.
The same construction works for a compact symplectic manifold with a compatible almost complex structure, with pseudoholomorphic curves in place of algebraic maps. The invariant is zero unless the degrees of the add up to the virtual dimension.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
