Grönwall bound

Definition

Let δ,K,ε\delta, K, \varepsilon be real numbers. The Grönwall bound with these parameters is the function Gδ,K,ε:R→RG_{\delta, K, \varepsilon} : \mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{R} given by Gδ,K,ε(x)={δ eKx+εK(eKx−1)if K≠0,δ+εxif K=0.G_{\delta, K, \varepsilon}(x) = \begin{cases} \delta\, e^{K x} + \dfrac{\varepsilon}{K} \left( e^{K x} - 1 \right) & \text{if } K \neq 0, \\ \delta + \varepsilon x & \text{if } K = 0. \end{cases}

Remarks

The function v=Gδ,K,εv = G_{\delta, K, \varepsilon} is the unique solution of v′=Kv+εv' = K v + \varepsilon, v(0)=δv(0) = \delta. For ε=0\varepsilon = 0, it is δeKx\delta e^{K x}. A form of Grönwall's inequality uses it: let f:[a,b]→Rnf : [a, b] \to \mathbb{R}^n be continuous and differentiable on (a,b)(a, b), with ∥f(a)∥≤δ\|f(a)\| \le \delta and ∥f′(x)∥≤K∥f(x)∥+ε\|f'(x)\| \le K \|f(x)\| + \varepsilon on (a,b)(a, b). Then ∥f(x)∥≤Gδ,K,ε(x−a)\|f(x)\| \le G_{\delta, K, \varepsilon}(x - a) on [a,b][a, b]. The estimate for approximate solutions is stated with this bound.

Explanations

L1 human

Suppose that a quantity starts at most at δ\delta and grows at most at rate KK times itself plus ε\varepsilon. The Grönwall bound is the largest value that it can reach. It is the solution of the extreme case, where both inequalities are equalities.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 3 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
  • no evidence level
  1. Interval concept
  2. Grönwall's inequality statement
  3. Grönwall bound definition

What depends on this

1 node uses this node, directly or through other nodes.
