Statement

Let f ⁣:X→Yf \colon X \to Y be a proper morphism of Noetherian schemes. Let Dqc+(X)D^+_{qc}(X) be the bounded below derived category of 𝒪X\mathcal{O}_X-modules with quasi-coherent cohomology sheaves, and similarly for YY. Let Rf∗ ⁣:Dqc+(X)→Dqc+(Y)Rf_* \colon D^+_{qc}(X) \to D^+_{qc}(Y) be the right derived functor of f∗f_*. Then Rf∗Rf_* has a right adjoint f! ⁣:Dqc+(Y)→Dqc+(X)f^! \colon D^+_{qc}(Y) \to D^+_{qc}(X): for ℱ∈Dqc+(X)\mathcal{F} \in D^+_{qc}(X) and 𝒢∈Dqc+(Y)\mathcal{G} \in D^+_{qc}(Y) there is a natural isomorphism Hom⁡D(Y)(Rf∗ℱ,𝒢)≅Hom⁡D(X)(ℱ,f!𝒢).\Hom_{D(Y)}(Rf_* \mathcal{F}, \mathcal{G}) \cong \Hom_{D(X)}(\mathcal{F}, f^! \mathcal{G}). If moreover ff is smooth of relative dimension nn, then f!𝒢≅Lf∗𝒢⊗ωX/Y[n]f^! \mathcal{G} \cong Lf^* \mathcal{G} \otimes \omega_{X/Y}[n], where ωX/Y=⋀nΩX/Y\omega_{X/Y} = \bigwedge^n \Omega_{X/Y} is the top exterior power of the sheaf of relative differentials.

Remarks

Grothendieck's theory of duality was first written up in Hartshorne's book Residues and Duality. In a later approach by Neeman, a right adjoint of Rf∗Rf_* on the unbounded category Dqc(X)D_{qc}(X) exists by Brown representability. The main content is then the explicit form of f!f^! and of the trace map Rf∗f!→idRf_* f^! \to \mathrm{id}.

Example: let Y=Spec⁡kY = \operatorname{Spec} k and XX a smooth projective variety of dimension nn over kk. Then f!k=ωX[n]f^! k = \omega_X[n], and taking ℱ\mathcal{F} to be a vector bundle placed in degree −i-i gives Serre duality Hn−i(X,ℰ∨⊗ωX)≅Hi(X,ℰ)∨H^{n-i}(X, \mathcal{E}^\vee \otimes \omega_X) \cong H^i(X, \mathcal{E})^\vee.

For a finite morphism ff, the right adjoint is f!𝒢=Rℋom𝒪Y(f∗𝒪X,𝒢)f^! \mathcal{G} = R\mathcal{H}om_{\mathcal{O}_Y}(f_* \mathcal{O}_X, \mathcal{G}), viewed as a complex of 𝒪X\mathcal{O}_X-modules.

For a student

The formula f!=Lf∗⊗ωX/Y[n]f^! = Lf^* \otimes \omega_{X/Y}[n] for smooth ff and the description of f!f^! for finite ff together compute f!f^! for projective morphisms, by factoring through a closed immersion into projective space. The complex f!𝒪Yf^! \mathcal{O}_Y is the relative dualizing complex; for flat ff of finite type it is concentrated in one degree exactly when the fibers of ff are Cohen–Macaulay. Grothendieck duality underlies the theory of dualizing complexes, local duality and the Grothendieck–Riemann–Roch formalism of pushforwards.
