Definition

A Grothendieck topos is a category ℰ\mathcal{E} that is equivalent to the category Sh(𝒞,J)\mathrm{Sh}(\mathcal{C}, J) of sheaves of sets on some small site (𝒞,J)(\mathcal{C}, J).

Remarks

Example: for a topological space XX, the category Sh(X)\mathrm{Sh}(X) of sheaves on the site of open sets of XX is a Grothendieck topos. Example: for a small category 𝒞\mathcal{C}, the category of presheaves on 𝒞\mathcal{C} is a Grothendieck topos, for the topology in which only maximal sieves cover. Non-example: the category of finite sets is an elementary topos but not a Grothendieck topos, since it lacks infinite coproducts, which every Grothendieck topos has. Every Grothendieck topos is an elementary topos and is complete and cocomplete. Giraud's theorem gives an intrinsic characterization.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
