Grothendieck universe
Builds on Power set
Definition
A Grothendieck universe is a set such that:
- If and , then .
- If , then .
- If , then the power set is in .
- If and is a family with for each , then .
Remarks
The set of hereditarily finite sets is a Grothendieck universe. Each clause holds because elements, pairs, power sets and finite unions of hereditarily finite sets are again hereditarily finite, and an index set is finite. The set is a non-example: it contains and each ordinal . The union of the family is , which is not in , so clause 4 fails. In ZFC the Grothendieck universes are exactly the empty set, , and the sets for inaccessible cardinals . Many authors add the clause , which leaves only the universes with inaccessible. The axiom of universes states that every set is an element of some Grothendieck universe; it is equivalent to the existence of arbitrarily large inaccessible cardinals.
