Definition

Let GG be a locally compact group with left Haar measure μ\mu, and let L1(G)L^1(G) be its group algebra. For a unitary representation π\pi of GG on a Hilbert space HH and f∈L1(G)f \in L^1(G), let π(f)\pi(f) be the bounded operator on HH given by ⟨π(f)u,v⟩=∫Gf(x)⟨π(x)u,v⟩ dμ(x)(u,v∈H).\ip{\pi(f)u}{v} = \int_G f(x) \ip{\pi(x)u}{v} \, d\mu(x) \quad (u, v \in H). For f∈L1(G)f \in L^1(G) put ∥f∥∗=sup⁡π∥π(f)∥,\norm{f}_* = \sup_\pi \norm{\pi(f)}, where π\pi runs over all unitary representations of GG. The group C*-algebra C∗(G)C^*(G) is the completion of L1(G)L^1(G) for the norm ∥⋅∥∗\norm{\cdot}_*. The reduced group C*-algebra Cr∗(G)C^*_r(G) is the closure of {λ(f):f∈L1(G)}\set{\lambda(f) : f \in L^1(G)} in the bounded operators on L2(G)L^2(G), where λ\lambda is the left regular representation.

Remarks

The supremum is finite, since ∥π(f)∥≤∥f∥1\norm{\pi(f)} \le \norm{f}_1, and ∥⋅∥∗\norm{\cdot}_* is a norm on L1(G)L^1(G), since the left regular representation is injective on L1(G)L^1(G). Both C∗(G)C^*(G) and Cr∗(G)C^*_r(G) are C*-algebras.

Example: for G=ℤG = \Z, the Fourier transform f↦∑nf(n)znf \mapsto \sum_n f(n) z^n identifies C∗(ℤ)C^*(\Z) and Cr∗(ℤ)C^*_r(\Z) with the algebra C(𝕋)C(\mathbb{T}) of continuous functions on the circle with the supremum norm.

Non-example: L1(G)L^1(G) with its own norm ∥⋅∥1\norm{\cdot}_1 is in general not a C*-algebra. In ℓ1(ℤ)\ell^1(\Z), let f=δ0+δ1−δ2f = \delta_0 + \delta_1 - \delta_2. Then f∗∗f=3δ0−δ2−δ−2f^* * f = 3\delta_0 - \delta_2 - \delta_{-2}, so ∥f∗∗f∥1=5\norm{f^* * f}_1 = 5, while ∥f∥12=9\norm{f}_1^2 = 9, and the C*-identity ∥f∗f∥=∥f∥2\norm{f^* f} = \norm{f}^2 fails.

There is always a surjective homomorphism C∗(G)→Cr∗(G)C^*(G) \to C^*_r(G); it is an isomorphism exactly when GG is amenable.
