Definition

Let NN and QQ be groups. An extension of QQ by NN is a group GG together with two group homomorphisms ι ⁣:N→G\iota \colon N \to G and π ⁣:G→Q\pi \colon G \to Q such that:

  1. ι\iota is injective.
  2. π\pi is surjective.
  3. The image of ι\iota equals the kernel of π\pi.

In other words, 1→N→ιG→πQ→11 \to N \xrightarrow{\iota} G \xrightarrow{\pi} Q \to 1 is a short exact sequence of groups. The extension is split if there is a homomorphism s ⁣:Q→Gs \colon Q \to G with π∘s=id⁡Q\pi \circ s = \id_Q. The extension is central if ι(N)\iota(N) lies in the centre of GG.

Remarks

In an extension, ι(N)\iota(N) is a normal subgroup of GG and G/ι(N)≅QG / \iota(N) \cong Q. Some authors call the same object an extension of NN by QQ, so the order of the words varies between books.

Example: G=S3G = S_3, N=A3N = A_3 with the inclusion ι\iota, and Q={±1}Q = \set{\pm 1} with π\pi the sign map. The inclusion is injective, the sign map is onto, and the kernel of the sign map is A3A_3. The extension is split: s(−1)=(1 2)s(-1) = (1\ 2) is a homomorphism with π∘s=id⁡\pi \circ s = \id.

Non-example: ι ⁣:ℤ→ℤ\iota \colon \Z \to \Z, n↦4nn \mapsto 4n, and π ⁣:ℤ→ℤ/2ℤ\pi \colon \Z \to \Z/2\Z, reduction modulo 22. Clauses 1 and 2 hold, but the image 4ℤ4\Z of ι\iota is not the kernel 2ℤ2\Z of π\pi, so clause 3 fails.

The extension 0→2ℤ/4ℤ→ℤ/4ℤ→ℤ/2ℤ→00 \to 2\Z/4\Z \to \Z/4\Z \to \Z/2\Z \to 0 does not split, because the only element of order 22 in ℤ/4ℤ\Z/4\Z lies in 2ℤ/4ℤ2\Z/4\Z. A split extension is the same as a semidirect product N⋊QN \rtimes Q. When NN is abelian, the extensions of QQ by NN that induce a given action of QQ on NN are classified up to equivalence by the second cohomology group H2(Q,N)H^2(Q, N).
