Group law on an elliptic curve

Builds on Elliptic curveAbelian groupField

Definition

Let KK be a field of characteristic not 22 or 33, and let E ⁣:y2=x3+ax+bE \colon y^2 = x^3 + ax + b be an elliptic curve over KK, with a,b∈Ka, b \in K and 4a3+27b2≠04a^3 + 27b^2 \ne 0. Let E(K)E(K) be the set of solutions (x,y)∈K2(x, y) \in K^2 together with the point at infinity OO. The group law on E(K)E(K) is the operation ++ defined as follows, for P=(x1,y1)P = (x_1, y_1) and Q=(x2,y2)Q = (x_2, y_2) in E(K)E(K):

  1. O+P=P+O=PO + P = P + O = P for every P∈E(K)P \in E(K).
  2. If x1=x2x_1 = x_2 and y1=−y2y_1 = -y_2, then P+Q=OP + Q = O.
  3. Otherwise, let λ=y2−y1x2−x1\lambda = \frac{y_2 - y_1}{x_2 - x_1} if x1≠x2x_1 \ne x_2, and λ=3x12+a2y1\lambda = \frac{3x_1^2 + a}{2y_1} if P=QP = Q. Then P+Q=(x3,y3)P + Q = (x_3, y_3) with x3=λ2−x1−x2x_3 = \lambda^2 - x_1 - x_2 and y3=λ(x1−x3)−y1y_3 = \lambda(x_1 - x_3) - y_1.

With this operation, E(K)E(K) is an abelian group with identity OO, and the inverse of (x,y)(x, y) is (x,−y)(x, -y).

Remarks

Geometrically, P+Q+R=OP + Q + R = O exactly when PP, QQ, RR are the three intersection points, counted with multiplicity, of EE with a line in the projective plane. The number λ\lambda is the slope of the line through PP and QQ, or of the tangent at PP when P=QP = Q.

Example: on y2=x3+1y^2 = x^3 + 1 over ℚ\Q, take P=Q=(2,3)P = Q = (2, 3). Then λ=3⋅4+06=2\lambda = \frac{3 \cdot 4 + 0}{6} = 2, x3=4−2−2=0x_3 = 4 - 2 - 2 = 0 and y3=2(2−0)−3=1y_3 = 2(2 - 0) - 3 = 1, so 2P=(0,1)2P = (0, 1), and indeed 12=03+11^2 = 0^3 + 1.

Non-example: the operation P∗QP * Q that sends P,QP, Q to the third intersection point of their line with EE, without the reflection, is not a group law. A neutral element ee for ∗* would have to lie on the tangent line at every point of EE. But only finitely many tangent lines of a smooth cubic pass through a given point.

Associativity is the hard part of the proof that E(K)E(K) is a group; it follows from the theorem of Riemann–Roch or from a direct computation with the formulas. For a general Weierstrass equation the formulas change, but the geometric rule stays the same.
