Group of nth roots of unity

Description

Let nn be a positive integer. The group of nnth roots of unity is the set μn={z∈C:zn=1}\mu_n = \{z \in \mathbb{C} : z^n = 1\} with complex multiplication. It is a finite abelian group of order nn, and its elements are e2πik/ne^{2\pi i k / n} for k=0,1,…,n−1k = 0, 1, \ldots, n - 1. It is cyclic, and the element e2πi/ne^{2\pi i / n} generates it.

Remarks

The group μn\mu_n is a subgroup of the circle group. For n=4n = 4, the group is {1,i,−1,−i}\{1, i, -1, -i\}. A generator of μn\mu_n is called a primitive nnth root of unity, and there are φ(n)\varphi(n) of them, where φ\varphi is Euler's totient function.

Explanations

L1 human

The nnth roots of unity are nn points on the unit circle that cut it into nn equal arcs. Multiplying two of them adds their angles, so the product is again one of these points. They behave like the rotations of a regular polygon with nn sides.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • field same_as: the identifiers in the databases (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 5 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
