Definition
Let be a scheme, and let be a scheme over . Products below are fiber products over , and all maps are morphisms over . A group scheme over is such a with morphisms , and such that:
- as morphisms .
- .
- .
Remarks
Equivalently, for every -scheme , the set of -morphisms carries a group structure, and the maps induced by -morphisms are group homomorphisms. This is the functor of points form of the definition. For example, the multiplicative group is a group scheme over . For an affine -scheme , its points are , the units of under multiplication. The affine line with multiplication is not a group scheme. Clause 3 fails, since the point has no multiplicative inverse in a nonzero ring .
