Definition
Let be a locally compact group with a left Haar measure . For , let be the unitary operator on given by , the left regular representation. The group von Neumann algebra of is the double commutant of the set of operators in the bounded operators on .
Remarks
By the von Neumann bicommutant theorem, is the closure in the strong operator topology of the linear span of the operators , and it is a von Neumann algebra.
Example: . Fourier series identify with , and with multiplication by . The commutant of these multiplications is the algebra of multiplications by functions in , which is its own commutant, so .
Non-example: the reduced group C*-algebra , acting by multiplication on , is not a von Neumann algebra. Its double commutant is , which is strictly larger than .
For a discrete group , the vector gives a faithful normal trace on . If is a nontrivial discrete group and every conjugacy class of other than is infinite, then is a factor of type .
