Grünwald–Letnikov derivative
Builds on Binomial coefficientLimit of a function
Definition
Let be real and let be an integer. The generalised binomial coefficient is , with . Let be real numbers and let . The Grünwald–Letnikov derivative of order of at , with lower terminal , is the limit when this limit exists.
Remarks
Example: for , and for . The sum is once , so is the left derivative of at , and it equals when is differentiable at . More generally, for an integer the sum is the -th backward difference, and the limit is when is times differentiable at . Non-example: for (the real cube root), , and , the quotient is . It tends to , so the limit does not exist in . The definition only sees values to the left of : for at it gives the one-sided value , although does not exist. For and of class on , the Grünwald–Letnikov derivative equals the Riemann–Liouville derivative of fractional calculus.
