Definition
An H-space is a pointed space together with a continuous map with these properties.
- .
- The map , , is homotopic to through pointed maps.
- The map , , is homotopic to through pointed maps.
Remarks
Some authors drop the condition that the homotopies fix ; for CW complexes the two definitions give the same class of spaces. An H-space is homotopy associative if , and homotopy commutative if , where swaps the factors.
Example: every topological group with its identity and its multiplication is an H-space, since on the nose.
Example: the loop space with concatenation of loops is an H-space; the constant loop is a unit up to the standard reparametrization homotopy.
Non-example: admits no such . If it did, let be a generator; the unit condition forces in . Then for the cup product, which is false since generates .
